Maritime Employers Liability insurance (MEL) provides protection for businesses operating on or near the water against claims of bodily injury, property damage, and legal liability. MEL covers injury, illness, or death of employees working in international or offshore maritime environments—especially when traditional Workers’ Compensation or the Jones Act doesn’t apply.
MEL insurance is essential for shipowners, offshore contractors, marine service providers, and concessionaires working in shipyards, ports, or onboard vessels. It is especially important for companies employing crew members on vessels they don’t own or those working in foreign waters.
Have more questions? Click below to schedule a consultation or receive a quote:
Standard Workers’ Compensation policies often exclude crew members covered under maritime law, such as the Jones Act—leaving a potential coverage gap for shipowners and operators. This coverage is designed to protect employers whose employees work on or from vessels which they do not own.
Have more questions? Click below to schedule a consultation or receive a quote:
No. MEL is not a substitute for Workers’ Compensation but rather a complement to it. It provides coverage where Workers’ Comp may not apply—such as for crew working outside the U.S. or in international waters.

Yes! We offer essential protection for maritime businesses employing crew members, shoreside workers, dockworkers, and other personnel engaged in maritime-related activities. Workers’ Compensation Insurance with U.S. Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (USL&H) coverage is required for employees working on or near navigable U.S. waters and our coverage ensures your company is fully compliant with both state Workers’ Compensation laws and federal USL&H laws.
